Low back pain: types, causes, treatment

Many of us are familiar with the feeling of pulling back pain. One has only to sit for a while in an uncomfortable position - and this is the result.

The fact that pain in the lumbar region, or lumbodynia, occurs very often, is evidenced by the fact that about 80% of the population at least once in their life is faced with it. As a rule, acute pain eventually turns into chronic, and, according to neurologists, a second episode occurs in 40% of patients within the next year, and in the long-term period, pain recurs in a total of 85% of patients.

What does lower back pain warn about?

Today, lumbodynia is considered by doctors not as a diagnosis, but as a symptom that often serves as a signal for the development of some kind of internal disease. Any, whether it be aching or shooting, acute or chronic pain in the lower back can be divided into primary, caused by the pathology of the spinal column itself, and secondary.

The latter signals a number of malfunctions in the body, for example, an infectious or tumor process in the pelvic organs, osteoporosis, inflammatory diseases of the ovaries, kidneys and other organs, dysmenorrhea, damage to large vessels or some diseases of the nervous system. . .

The main causes of low back pain

Osteochondrosis is the most common cause of lower back pain, and it is quite easy to "earn" it by sitting in front of a computer for a long time, driving a car, or doing some monotonous work, constantly repeating the same movements. As a result, the nerve roots from the spinal cord are pinched.

As a rule, low back pain in osteochondrosis increases gradually, at first a person may feel only a slight ache in the lower back, which quickly disappears when the position of the body changes. However, over time, the pain becomes stronger, worsening even with a simple cough or sneeze. In addition, a varied curvature of the lumbar spine becomes noticeable: right-left or front-back.

Back pain

If the nerve roots are strongly infringed, there may be a decrease in the sensitivity of the skin and muscles of the lower half of the body, even dysfunction of the bladder and colon.

Severe and sudden back pain

Such pain intensifies when touching the body, with the slightest movement, when a person freezes in a bent position, unable to move. In this case, lumbago or sciatica can be assumed.

In the first case, the pain is caused by a dystrophic process in the intervertebral disc, the nucleus of which literally falls apart into separate fragments.

With sciatica, the nerve roots located next to the sacrum are infringed, as well as the sciatic nerve, the largest in the body, is damaged. This nerve runs from the lumbar spine, goes down the leg and reaches the very tips of the fingers, so pain can appear along its entire length and cause serious inconvenience to a person.

Pain where the ribs attach to the spine

Such pain is usually dull, aching, radiates to the lower abdomen, navel and hypochondrium. When it appears, you should seriously think about kidney disease, since the pain is associated with stretching the capsule in which the kidney is placed, and this happens, for example, with pyelonephritis or blockage of the ureter.

Low back pain during pregnancy

It should be clearly understood that the causes of early pain are different from those of late pregnancy. You should not panic if the lower back slightly aches in the early stages, this may be a physiological process that does not require any measures.

Lower back pain during pregnancy

But if the pain is sharp enough, pulsating, you should immediately consult a gynecologist, because it is during this period that the risk of miscarriage is not excluded. Also, at the initial stage, the level of the hormone progesterone in a woman's blood rises, and the pain may be associated with this.

It happens that the lower abdomen hurts along with the lower back, in this case, it is also necessary to consult a doctor, since you urgently need to make sure that the pregnancy is not ectopic.

In late pregnancy, pulling back pain is absolutely natural, because the baby grows, presses the head on the sacrum, and the hormone relaxin, which is necessary for muscle relaxation during childbirth, begins to be produced, and this can also cause mild low back pain.

In addition, the closer to childbirth, the more often the body arranges "pain exercises", training and preparing the expectant mother.

But severe and sharp lower back pain in late pregnancy may indicate a shortening of the cervix and the opening of the uterine pharynx. This situation is already critical, and urgent medical attention is needed.

Pain that is accompanied by fatigue and the desire to lie down

We can talk about a typical problem of middle-aged women, namely, the so-called spinal instability. There is a lesion of the disc or intervertebral joint against the background of excess weight, and it can be difficult for a woman not to bend, but, on the contrary, to straighten out. And any movements begin to seem superfluous and unnecessary.

How to cope with low back pain

Only a specialist doctor will be able to answer this question specifically after a serious examination and diagnosis, so in no case should you delay visiting him. The general list of measures to combat lumbodynia includes both medications and a variety of physiotherapeutic agents.

How to cope with low back pain

The following are the main treatments:

  • Medicines - non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, analgesic, hormonal;
  • Injections (blockages) in the area of the intervertebral joints and in certain muscle points;
  • Acupuncture;
  • Manual and physiotherapy;
  • Remedial gymnastics;
  • Surgical treatment.

In addition, to limit the range of motion, it is sometimes recommended to wear special corsets that can significantly relieve the spine.

And, finally, we need to remember the common truth that the disease is easier to prevent than to cure. Therefore, do not forget about sports, gymnastics and active recreation, because in mobile and athletic people, lower back pain is much less common.
